College visits
Tom and I have been visiting some colleges in North Carolina and Virginia. Wednesday we visited Elon, which was very nice. Then we headed up to Blacksburg Virginia to see Virginia Tech. VT made a really great impression on Tom. In his words, “I’d really like to go there; I wouldn’t rather be anywhere else.” That moves it ahead of Stanford where we visited last summer.
As we were coming on to campus we noticed that all the buildings were faced with the same kind of stone. Later our tour guide explained that it’s stone they mine from their own quarry, fondly referred to as ‘Hokie Stone‘. (They’ll put ‘Hokie‘ in front of anything.) This quarry is also used by the mining engineering students for their hand’s on explosives lab – how cool is that? Today we stopped at Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill, but it was raining so I didn’t get any pictures.
