Modern Dance at the Tsai Performance Center
Last night we went to see Aszure Barton & Artists at the Tsai Performance Center. The Boston Celebrity Series can be counted on to have top dance ensembles, like the Mark Morris Dance Group and Alvin Ailey Dance Theater. This year we decided to see someone new rather than the tried and true. I’m really glad we did. One of the things I really liked about Aszure Barton’s choreography was the way that it incorporated expressions, like a wink, a wave and a nod to draw you in. There was a real connection between the dancers and the audience.
The program consisted of Blue Soup, a melange of some of her earlier works, and BUSK (excepts above). It makes sense to me that she would be a protégé of Mikhail Baryshnikov. Her choreography has a fluidity that reminds me of Baryshnikov dancing Twyla Tharp.
