Fallingwater
While we were visiting Peter last weekend, we made a quick drive out to Mill Run to visit Fallingwater.
We’ve certainly seen thousands of pictures of the house over the years, but seeing it in person really made us realize how well it is really tied into its surroundings.
It has become kind of fashionable to criticize various perceived shortcomings of the house, but it really is an amazing piece of work. Everything is so carefully lined up that the inessential elements seem to disappear. Notice how everything between the two slabs seems completely transparent in this picture.
The other thing you can’t get from pictures is how the house sounds. The noise of the moving water must have made it the most amazing house to sleep in. It reminded me of the sound of the waves at our summer cottage when I was a kid. It must have been the perfect place for the Kaufmann’s to get away from the noise and mess of downtown Pittsburgh.
You can find more of our pictures here, but we really think that you should visit and see (and hear) it for yourself.
