It’s Started!
We’re having a bunch of work done on our house. The biggest piece is replacing this beast:
That’s a 40 year old Weil-McLain oil furnace. It has definitely been showing its age lately, and it is way past time for us to move off of fossil fuels for this sort of job. I’ll post details of the fancy new system later.
We’re also completely rebuilding the kitchen (which Chris is very excited about), revamping a bathroom, and adding a deck on the back of the house.
The project is being managed by an outfit called Byggmeister. They’re a pretty interesting company. They sort of specialize in taking older homes and upgrading them to modern standards. They have a fairly impressive insulation system planned for us. Pretty much any sort of insulation would be an upgrade. Whenever I’ve opened up a wall, the only thing I’ve found in there is copies of the Boston Globe from 1950 (BTW, their comics section was way, way better back then).
We’ve really enjoyed working through the design process with Byggmeister. They’ve been very helpful in working through the design of the new spaces and in vetting all of the subcontractors for us.
We’ve spent several weeks now getting the house cleared out so that the work could start. That involved sorting through 30 years of accumulation, taking it to various recycling centers, throwing some of it away …
… and moving the rest to storage.
It’s been a lot of work! Last night, we didn’t finish until well after 10 PM.
But, today is a big day. This is the day the first contractors showed up and started knocking holes in the walls! This is what our driveway looked like this morning:
The next couple of months will probably be a bit stressful, but it is pretty exciting to have reached this point.
