Construction Update
I stopped by the house this morning to see how the work was going. I haven’t been by in a while because of hurricanes and things. They’ve made a lot of progress.
The footings for the new deck are all in.
They hit a couple of surprises like an old sewer line and a giant boulder, but they worked around those. The mason will be back in a bit to add a nice granite slab at the bottom of the stairs.
Most of the recent work has gone into framing the kitchen. We’re blowing out some walls to open this part of the house up. That can get tricky in an 75 year old house, and this area was already a bit wobbly. I was impressed by how solid the new work looks. They’ve hidden this big glulam beam up in the ceiling to support the 2nd floor and tie everything together.
That looks like it’ll do a nice job, but it was a little tricky. The right end joins the outside wall in the middle of that plumbing stack you can see, and the other end is right over the door to the cellar. That required more engineering to transform the load down to the corner of the garage.
But it all looks good. The last bit of framing to do in this area is reinforcing this scarf joint that’s directly over the big door to the deck.
But I’m sure they’ll knock that off pretty quickly. Then we’re on to electrical!
