Roadtrip
The last couple of weekends have been pretty busy around our house.
First we had microcar weekend. The weather was wonderful, and we spent a couple of days driving backroads with a bunch of old friends:
It was great to see everyone again, and see their latest projects:

The next weekend we went up to the Mt. Washington hotel.
That’s one of our favorite places when the weather is hot in New England. We used to go there every summer when I worked at the MathWorks. But this year we were going for a reunion of the Lifelong Kindergarten group at MIT’s Media Lab. Chris worked there for many years, and this was a great chance to catch up with all of her old friends who came from every corner of the globe.
Instead of going straight home after that, we headed north.
After a quick stop at the wonderfully quirky Fairbanks museum in St. Johnsbury VT …
… we crossed the border and headed for a really nice B&B in Magog QC on lake Memphremagog. We did a lot of hiking …
… ate a lot of good food (esp. ice cream!), visited wineries and dairies, and drove a lot of wonderful backroads through the eastern townships; including a quick stop in Knowlton, which is famous as the home of Chief Inspector Gamache.
And after that, we headed south through Dixville notch, which is home to another of the great old NH summer hotels.
Unfortunately, the Balsams is closed for renovations so we couldn’t visit. But we did manage a nice, but rather wet, hike up to Huntington Falls.
Then it was back in the car and off to Tamworth NH to meet up with the Boston Mycological Club. We spent the weekend in a rustic cottage on a farm …
… and went on several more hikes.
But these involved hunting for interesting fungi.
There was more good food, of course, including an omelet which was made with fresh eggs from the farm, chanterelles we picked, and bread from the local farmer’s market.
Finally, on Sunday, we headed home with a couple of quick stops in the lakes region.
Whew! That was a lot of fun, but there were plenty of chores waiting for us once we returned home.
