Redefining Sanity
I find the sheer craziness of modern US politics hard to understand. The best explanation I’ve found is Richard Hofstadter’s classic Anti-Intellectualism in American Life.
This morning, Chris Ladd posted an interesting article called Where the Crazy May Be Coming From. He argues for using a different context for understanding the craziness. One I wouldn’t have thought of. Do you remember Alvin Toeffler’s book Future Shock? He wrote it back in 1970. The basic idea was that individuals (or societies) can become overwhelmed by too much change in too short a period of time.
I’m not sure I agree with Chris, but I think that his argument is pretty interesting. Go read it here and see what you think.
