Ladysmith Black Mombazo & Miloš Karadaglić
We saw a couple of great concerts this week.
First up was Ladysmith Black Mombazo at Sanders theater. This concert was originally supposed to be Saturday night, but the blizzard forced them to delay it until Sunday night.
The delay and transportation problems seemed to have left them fired up and ready to go. In addition to their great harmonies, there was a lot of great dancing, story telling and general horsing around. The group is currently going through an interesting period as Joseph hands over the reins to his sons. He left the stage for an extended period and let the kids run the show. I guess that his youngest son Thamsanqa is going to be taking over the lead. He has a wonderful voice, although it is a lot higher than Joseph’s, which might change some of their old hits.
And then last night we went to see Miloš Karadaglić at the Longy School. After a great first set with a Bach lute suite and some of the Villa-Lobos etudes, Miloš performed a number of interesting little pieces by South American composers. After that he did a really wonderful piece by Carlo Domeniconi called Koyunbaba. Like LBM, Miloš has a great stage presence and does a lot of talking and joking around between pieces.
