Wheel Bearings
I’m finally back in the (very cold) workshop after a lot of running around this winter. One big item on this winter’s todo list was replacing the front wheel bearings on the Westfield. It’s actually not a bad job because the Miata bearings are done as a pre-assembled unit. You can find the details here on miata.net.
I was really just doing this as preventative maintenance. They hadn’t been making any funny noises yet, but I knew they were getting old.
Well, when I pulled the old ones, the grease seals looked like this:
That means that damp has been getting into the grease for a while now. If you poke at it, you can feel that the grease feels kind of like pea soup at this point. So it was definitely time.
Here’s one of the shiny new ones on the spindle.
Just need to tighten them down and reassemble everything.
