Middlesex Fells
Today we did a short hike on the Skyline Trail in Middlesex Fells. We went down to the south end of the Fells, and climbed up to Wright’s Tower to get a nice view of the downtown skyline. We saw two goldfinches bouncing around the tower above the treetops. Sorry we couldn’t get a picture, but they were moving too fast. Peter decided that he’d like to be a goldfinch when he grows up.
This is the best time to hike in New England because it’s blueberry season. We found a really nice patch just beside the trail. Tom thinks the best way to eat the blueberries is all at once. Peter likes to savor them one at a time.
We saw a lot of critters on our walk, including this dragonfly that was sitting on the blueberries, so we couldn’t reach the really ripe ones close by. Tom spotted three garter snakes, including one pretty big one. He says the trick is to listen for a constant rustling noise. He also saw something small, grey and furry – probably a field mouse or shrew. But our favorite critter of the day was this tiny golden frog that Peter found. It really did glisten like gold.
