Minecraft Terrain Generation
Peter has been completely hooked on Minecraft for months now. He has lots of great stories to tell about managing a server, writing mods and all sorts of other things, but I haven’t been able to get him to come up for air long enough to write any of them up for the blog since his first post on the subject.
Until then, I’ll post a link to this interesting article Notch just posted about how the terrain generation works. He says that it’s the first of many technical posts he’s going to put up, so follow along on his blog.
If you’re not familiar with the type of code Notch’s talking about, you might want to read up on Ken Perlin’s noise algorithm first. Ken has a really nice intro (with pictures) here.
And I’ll keep bugging Peter to post some of his stories.
