Goodbye Greeny
23 years ago, Massachusetts switched from one green license plate to two red ones. There were good reasons for this, but a lot of people have resisted the change. I didn’t go as far as some of the people described in this article, but I’ve certainly grown attached to my old greeny with its big wad of old stickers in the corner. Well, today I finally turned it in.
The plates aren’t the only things that have changed since I first got my greeny. One change I really noticed today is how much better dealing with the Registry has become. When I first started going there, it was a really awful experience. Today it was actually quite pleasant. I didn’t have to wait in line or file out forms. I just handed her my old greeny and she gave me two red ones in return. It wouldn’t have been that easy in the old days. And for most things you don’t even need to go into the Registry today. People still love to complain about the RMV, but it’s certainly much better than it used to be.
The Globe recently collected a gallery of photos readers sent in of their greenies.
