Shadowbox
When we were in the UK, Chris’ friend Alison gave us these wonderful little shoes she made.
They’re ceramic, and very delicate. So we were worried about how to display them without worrying about them getting damaged. The best solution seemed to be a shadowbox. We couldn’t find one we liked, so I made one.
Like so many things I make, it’s rather overly complicated. There are two parts. The outside is a mitered box of paduak with maple splines keyed in. It’s finished in Danish oil.
The glass is permanently installed in a rabbet. In addition, there are a couple of strips of EL tape across the top. That’s so the shadowbox doesn’t add too much shadow.
The second part is made out of poplar and fits inside of that. It is cut at a slight angle. About 8 degrees. The front of it is covered in cloth and has a carbon fiber rod to hold the shoes. This all goes into the frame from the back and locks in with 4 setscrews.
